CANDLE CARE & SAFETY

Last Updated: 27 August 2026

Candle Care & Safety

Aanché candles are designed to be enjoyed slowly and intentionally. Because every candle involves an open flame and heated wax, proper use and care are essential.

Please read these instructions before lighting your candle and keep them available for future reference.

Never leave a burning candle unattended.

1. BEFORE YOU LIGHT YOUR CANDLE

Before every burn:

  • Place the candle on a stable, level and heat-resistant surface.

  • Ensure the candle is positioned away from drafts, fans, air-conditioners and open windows.

  • Keep the candle away from curtains, books, paper, bedding, furniture, clothing and all other flammable or combustible materials.

  • Keep the candle away from children and pets.

  • Ensure there is sufficient clear space around the candle.

  • Do not place the candle underneath shelves, cabinets or other surfaces that could be affected by heat.

  • Never place the candle directly on a delicate, painted or heat-sensitive surface.

  • Check the ceramic vessel for cracks, chips or other visible damage before every use.

  • Do not use a candle in a damaged vessel.

2. YOUR FIRST BURN

The first burn is particularly important because it helps establish the candle's initial melt pool.

For the first burn:

  1. Place the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface.

  2. Light the wick carefully.

  3. Allow the wax to melt sufficiently across the surface without leaving the candle unattended.

  4. Do not intentionally burn the candle for an excessively long period.

  5. Follow the maximum burn-time recommendation supplied with your specific candle.

Avoid extinguishing the candle too soon during its first use, as repeatedly burning a candle for very short periods may contribute to uneven wax consumption or tunnelling.

Do not burn the candle continuously for extended periods.

3. TRIM THE WICK BEFORE EACH BURN

Before relighting your candle:

  • Allow the wax to cool completely.

  • Trim the wick to approximately 5 mm before lighting again, unless a different wick length is specified for your particular candle.

  • Remove loose wick trimmings and debris from the wax surface.

A properly trimmed wick helps maintain a controlled flame and can reduce excessive soot, smoke and mushrooming.

Never trim or adjust a wick while the candle is burning or while the wax is hot.

4. HOW LONG SHOULD YOU BURN YOUR CANDLE?

Do not burn your candle continuously for longer than the maximum burn time specified on the individual product page or product packaging.

As a general safety principle:

Never leave a burning candle unattended, regardless of how much time remains in the recommended burn period.

If the flame becomes unusually large, unstable, produces excessive smoke or soot, or the vessel becomes excessively hot, extinguish the candle and allow it to cool completely.

Do not relight until the cause has been addressed.

5. NEVER LEAVE A BURNING CANDLE UNATTENDED

This is the most important rule.

Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Do not leave a candle burning while:

  • sleeping;

  • leaving the room;

  • leaving your home;

  • cooking;

  • taking a bath or shower;

  • engaging in activities where the candle cannot be continuously monitored.

If you leave the room, extinguish the candle.

6. KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN & PETS

Keep burning candles completely out of the reach of:

  • children;

  • babies;

  • pets; and

  • anyone who may accidentally knock the candle over.

Remember that the ceramic vessel, wax and surrounding surface can become hot during use.

A candle should never be treated as a toy or left within reach of a child or pet, even if it is not currently burning.

7. KEEP YOUR CANDLE AWAY FROM DRAFTS

Avoid placing your candle near:

  • open windows;

  • fans;

  • air-conditioners;

  • air purifiers;

  • frequently used doorways; or

  • other sources of moving air.

Air movement can cause the flame to flicker excessively, burn unevenly, produce smoke or soot, and potentially heat the vessel unevenly.

8. NEVER MOVE A BURNING CANDLE

Do not move or carry a candle while:

  • the wick is lit;

  • the wax is liquid;

  • the vessel is hot; or

  • the candle has recently been extinguished.

Hot wax can cause burns and may spill if the candle is moved.

Allow the candle to cool and the wax to solidify completely before moving it.

9. DO NOT TOUCH THE VESSEL WHILE HOT

The ceramic vessel can become hot during burning.

Do not touch, pick up or relocate the candle while it is burning or immediately after extinguishing it.

Allow it to cool completely before handling.

Place the candle where accidental contact with the hot vessel is unlikely.

10. NEVER ADD WATER TO A BURNING CANDLE

Never pour water onto a burning candle.

Water can cause hot wax to splatter and may create a dangerous reaction when introduced to a flame and heated wax.

Use an appropriate candle snuffer or carefully extinguish the flame using a suitable method.

11. EXTINGUISHING YOUR CANDLE

When extinguishing your candle:

  • Extinguish the flame carefully.

  • Avoid touching or moving the vessel while it is hot.

  • Allow the wax and vessel to cool completely before handling.

  • Do not pour water onto the flame or wax.

  • Before leaving the candle, ensure the flame has been completely extinguished.

A candle snuffer can be used to extinguish the flame safely.

12. IF THE FLAME BECOMES TOO LARGE

A large or unstable flame should not be ignored.

If you notice:

  • an unusually tall flame;

  • excessive flickering;

  • excessive smoke;

  • excessive soot;

  • a flame contacting the vessel or surrounding objects; or

  • any other unusual burning behaviour,

extinguish the candle immediately and allow it to cool completely.

Do not attempt to move the candle while it is hot.

Once completely cool, inspect the wick and wax surface before considering another burn.

If the problem continues, discontinue use and contact us at:

hello@aanche.in

13. WICK MUSHROOMING

A small amount of carbon build-up or "mushrooming" at the tip of a wick can occur during burning.

If this occurs:

  1. Extinguish the candle.

  2. Allow the candle and wax to cool completely.

  3. Trim the wick to approximately 5 mm.

  4. Remove the trimmed wick debris before relighting.

Do not allow large amounts of wick debris to remain in the wax.

14. SOOT & SMOKE

Some environmental and burning conditions can contribute to soot or smoke, including:

  • an excessively long wick;

  • drafts;

  • excessive burn times;

  • debris in the wax; or

  • an unstable flame.

If your candle begins producing excessive smoke or soot:

Extinguish it and allow it to cool.

Once cool, trim the wick appropriately and ensure the candle is placed away from drafts before the next burn.

If excessive smoking continues, discontinue use and contact Aanché.

15. TUNNELLING & UNEVEN BURNING

Tunnelling occurs when the wax near the centre burns down while significant wax remains around the sides.

This can be influenced by burning a candle for very short periods repeatedly or by environmental conditions.

To encourage an even burn:

  • Follow the recommended burn duration for your candle.

  • Keep the candle on a level surface.

  • Avoid drafts.

  • Keep the wick properly trimmed.

  • Do not repeatedly extinguish the candle after only a very short burn.

Never attempt to correct tunnelling by overheating the candle or by leaving it burning for an unsafe amount of time.

16. KEEP THE WAX SURFACE CLEAN

Before each burn, check the wax surface.

Remove:

  • wick trimmings;

  • matches;

  • dust;

  • paper;

  • decorative debris; and

  • any other foreign material.

Never place objects, fragrances, oils, dried flowers, crystals, stones or other materials into or onto a burning candle unless they are specifically designed and approved as part of that candle.

Foreign objects can create additional fire hazards.

17. DO NOT ADD ANYTHING TO THE CANDLE

Do not add:

  • essential oils;

  • perfume;

  • additional fragrance;

  • glitter;

  • dried flowers;

  • herbs;

  • paper;

  • decorative objects;

  • additional wax;

  • another wick; or

  • any other material

to an Aanché candle while it is intended for burning.

Do not modify the candle or wick.

18. WHEN TO STOP USING YOUR CANDLE

Discontinue use when:

  • the vessel becomes damaged;

  • the vessel develops a crack or chip;

  • the candle burns abnormally;

  • the flame becomes consistently uncontrollable;

  • excessive smoke continues despite proper wick care;

  • the candle reaches the minimum remaining-wax level specified on its packaging or product instructions; or

  • you otherwise believe continued use may be unsafe.

Never burn a candle all the way down to the bottom of its vessel.

Follow the product-specific end-of-life instruction supplied with your candle.

19. CERAMIC VESSEL CARE

Your Aanché candle may be housed in a ceramic vessel.

Ceramic is heat-resistant, but heat-resistant does not mean heat-proof or immune to thermal stress.

To protect the vessel:

  • Do not expose it to sudden temperature changes.

  • Do not place a hot vessel on a cold or wet surface.

  • Do not immerse a hot vessel in water.

  • Do not use a cracked or damaged vessel.

  • Allow the vessel to cool naturally after use.

20. STORAGE

When not in use:

  • Store the candle in a cool, dry place.

  • Keep it away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Keep it away from children and pets.

  • Keep the lid on, where a lid is supplied.

  • Keep the candle away from sources of ignition.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures.

Fragrance and wax characteristics can change when a candle is exposed to excessive heat or direct sunlight for extended periods.

21. NEVER USE A CANDLE FOR ANY PURPOSE OTHER THAN ITS INTENDED USE

A candle is intended to be used as a decorative and fragranced candle with an open flame.

Do not:

  • use the candle as a heating device;

  • use the vessel as a cooking container while the candle is burning;

  • place the candle inside another container while burning;

  • use the candle as a source of emergency lighting;

  • carry a lit candle; or

  • modify the product.

22. FIRE SAFETY

If a candle causes a fire:

Do not attempt to move the burning candle.

If it is safe to do so, extinguish the flame using an appropriate fire-safety method.

Never use water on a wax fire.

If a fire cannot be safely controlled immediately, evacuate the area and contact the appropriate emergency services.

Your personal safety should always take priority over saving the candle, vessel or other property.

23. IMPORTANT SAFETY REMINDER

NEVER:

Leave a burning candle unattended.

Burn a candle near anything that can catch fire.

Burn a candle within reach of children or pets.

Move a candle while it is burning or hot.

Pour water onto a burning candle.

Use a candle with a cracked or damaged vessel.

Add foreign materials to the wax.

Allow the candle to burn all the way to the bottom of the vessel.

24. PRODUCT-SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS

Different Aanché candles may have different:

  • vessel shapes;

  • wax blends;

  • wick configurations;

  • fragrance compositions;

  • recommended burn times; and

  • end-of-life instructions.

Always follow the safety instructions printed on your candle's packaging and the product-specific instructions provided with your candle.

Where product-specific instructions differ from the general guidance on this page, follow the more specific product instruction, provided it is consistent with applicable safety requirements.
